Sampoerna is the pioneer in the Machine-Made Kretek Low Tar (SKM LT) cigarette category in Indonesia by introducing Sampoerna A in 1989.

The Company also produces some of the best-known kretek (clove) cigarette brand families including Dji Sam Soe Magnum, Marlboro Filter Black, and Sampoerna Kretek.

 

Sampoerna is a subsidiary of PT Philip Morris Indonesia (“PMID”) and an affiliate of Philip Morris International Inc. (“PMI”) since 2005. PMI is a leading international tobacco company with global brand Marlboro. The scope of activities of the company consists of, among others, manufacturing, trading, and distributing cigarettes, including distribution of Marlboro, the leading international cigarette brand manufactured by PMID.

Sampoerna’s experienced management team leverages global best practices and world-class systems to oversee more than 90,000 workers, both directly and indirectly.

In addition, Sampoerna also partners with 43 Third-Party Operators (TPOs) that are owned and operated by cooperatives or regional entrepreneurs. The company sells and distributes cigarettes through 105 locations of zone branch offices, sales offices, and distribution centers across Indonesia.

Sampoerna has several subsidiaries that actively contribute to Sampoerna's overall business performance across the years. All shares of these subsidiaries are wholly owned by Sampoerna, either directly or indirectly.

PT Perusahaan Dagang dan Industri Panamas (Panamas) is a subsidiary of Sampoerna, a limited liability company, engaged in various business activities, including the distribution of goods (especially tobacco products), transportation and warehousing, advertising, real estate, and management consulting. Panamas have more than 5,000 employees spread across Indonesia and an extensive distribution network covering more than 90% of cities/regencies in Indonesia.

PT SRC Indonesia Sembilan (SRCIS) is a limited liability company that was previously known as PT Union Sampoerna Dinamika. This subsidiary of Sampoerna was duly established on September 18, 1999, before changing its name to PT SRC Indonesia Sembilan on June 8, 2018. SRCIS is engaged in general trading, digital platform for commercial and agency.

PT Sampoerna Karya Bangsa (SKB) is a limited liability company that was previously known as PT Wahana Sampoerna. SKB was duly established on April 10, 1989, and operates in job training.

PT Harapan Karya Sembilan (HKS), previously known as PT Harapan Maju Sentosa, is a subsidiary of Sampoerna, established under Indonesian law. Currently, HKS operates in the creative services industry, including management consulting, advertising, and brand management services. The main goal of HKS is to help build strong brands and execute effective marketing activities to ensure these brands excel in their class.

PT Persada Makmur Indonesia (Persada Makmur) is a subsidiary of Sampoerna, a limited liability company. Persada Makmur duly established on September 2, 2003, engaged in the cigarette trading business.

PT Sampoerna Indonesia Sembilan (SIS) is a limited liability company previously known as PT Asia Tembakau. This subsidiary of Sampoerna duly established on February 13, 2002, before changing its name to PT Sampoerna Indonesia Sembilan on January 30, 2015. SIS is engaged in the cigarette manufacturing and trading business.

Sampoerna International Pte. Ltd. (SIP) is a subsidiary of Sampoerna duly established on February 21, 1995, and engages in equity investment business in Singapore.

  • Liem Seeng Tee, a Chinese immigrant, began his business by producing and selling hand-rolled kretek cigarettes at his home in Surabaya. His small business was among the first to manufacture and market kretek cigarettes under the brand Dji Sam Soe.
  • Liem Seeng Tee then formed a company under the name Sampoerna, moved both his family and factory to a building complex in Surabaya, “Taman Sampoerna”.
  • The second generation of the family, Aga Sampoerna, ran the business and focused on the production of Sigaret Kretek Tangan (SKT).
  • The third generation of the family, Putera Sampoerna, took the helm of Sampoerna. Under his leadership, Sampoerna’s growth accelerated.
  • Sampoerna launched Sampoerna A, a pioneer Machine-Made Kretek Low Tar Cigarette (SKM LT) product.
  • Sampoerna became a public company listed on the Jakarta Stock Exchange (now Indonesia Stock Exchange) under the ticker HMSP, establishing a modern corporate structure and embarking on a period of investment and expansion.
  • The fourth generation of the family, Michael Sampoerna, took charge as the leader of the Company.
  • With its business success, Sampoerna drew the interest of Philip Morris International (PMI). This led to Philip Morris Indonesia (PMID), a subsidiary of PMI, to acquire majority ownership of Sampoerna in May 2005.
  • Sampoerna overtook the number one market share position in Indonesia’s cigarette market.
  • Sampoerna inaugurated a Sigaret Kretek Mesin (SKM) manufacturing facility in Karawang, with an investment of USD250 million.
  • Sampoerna surpassed 100 billion units in sales volume.
  • Sampoerna completed a rights issue to comply with the requirement that listed companies have at least 7.5% of their paid-up capital in the hands of non-controlling shareholders and non-major shareholders.
  • Sampoerna undertook a 1:25 share split to provide investors with an affordable stock price and attract a wider base of retail investors. 
  • Sampoerna established IQOS Club Indonesia and IQOS Booths in Jakarta.
  • Sampoerna announced the realization of an investment totaling approximately USD166.1 million for the production of the tobacco sticks for IQOS under the HEETS brand in Karawang, West Java.
  • Sampoerna's Smoke-Free Product facility in Karawang, West Java, with total investment of USD186 million, started operations in the fourth quarter of 2022.
  • Inauguration of an innovative smoke-free tobacco products factory and the first export shipment to Asia Pacific in January 2023 as well as the operation of a World-class R&D Laboratory with state-of-the-art facilities, specifically for innovative smoke-free tobacco products completed in the third quarter of 2023.
  • The inauguration of the two new Hand-Rolled Kretek Cigarette (Sigaret Kretek Tangan/SKT) manufacturing facilities in Blitar City, East Java and Tegal Regency, Central Java, also included expanding partnerships with 5 Third-Party Operators (TPOs) owned and operated by local entrepreneurs and/or cooperatives in East Java and Central Java.

    Sampoerna constantly strive to deliver high quality products to fulfil adult consumers' preferences. Currently, our product portfolio consists of combustible cigarettes and smoke-free products.

    Our combustible cigarettes product portfolio offers a wide range of products across Machine-Made Kretek (SKM), Hand-rolled Kretek (SKT), Machine-Made White (SPM) and Hand-Rolled White (SPT) categories. 

    Our smoke-free products (SFP) portfolio consists of heat-not-burn, e-vapor, and oral smokeless products.

    How we operate

    With headquarters in Surabaya as well as a representative office in Jakarta, we produce cigarettes in nine manufacturing facilities, which are two machine-made kretek cigarette (SKM) production facilities in Pasuruan (East Java) and Karawang (West Java), one innovative smoke-free tobacco products in Karawang (West Java), and six hand-rolled kretek cigarette (SKT) production facilities in Surabaya, Malang, Probolinggo, Blitar, and Tegal.

     

    In addition to our own manufacturing facilities, we partner with 43 third-party operators (TPOs) which are owned and operatated by local cooperatives and entrepreneurs to produce SKT products.

     

    We sell and distribute cigarettes through 105 sales offices and distribution offices.
