Sampoerna Vaccinates Tens of Thousands of Third Party Operators’ Employees through the Gotong Royong Program

The vaccination program is part of Sampoerna’s target to vaccinate around 65,000 direct and indirect employees by the end of August

Mojokerto, August 6, 2021 – PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. (Sampoerna) continues its commitment to vaccinate all direct and indirect employees of the company, totaling around 65,000. The majority of the employees work at six of Sampoerna’s production facilities and the 38 Third Party Operators (TPOs) spread across cities and regencies in Java.

Coinciding with the Indonesian Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah’s visit to East Java, Sampoerna holds a vaccination program at two TPOs located in Mojokerto Regency with a total of 1,720 employees to be vaccinated. The program, which runs from 5-7 August, is carried out through the Gotong Royong vaccination program provided by the Government of Indonesia in collaboration with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN).

Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah, who observed the vaccination process, said, “We appreciate the steps taken by business actors in facilitating vaccination for their employees, especially in a labor-intensive industry like this. The active participation of businesses such as this initiative by Sampoerna will certainly help the Government’s efforts to reduce the rate of transmission and help accelerate efforts to build herd immunity against COVID-19.”

Sampoerna Director Elvira Lianita stated, “This vaccination program is a manifestation of our commitment to prioritizing the health and safety of our employees and is also part of our efforts to continue contributing to the economy during this pandemic. As a labor-intensive industry, Sampoerna always applies strict health protocol standards and provides other protective measures to ensure the health and safety of its employees.”

Elvira also reported the progress of the vaccination program in Sampoerna to the Manpower Minister. “As of 30 July 2021, more than 42,000 individuals or 65% of Sampoerna’s direct and indirect employees have received at least one dose of vaccination. The rest are scheduled to receive vaccination from the Gotong Royong program in stages until the end of August. We are targeting to have vaccinated around 65,000 employees by the time we commemorate Sampoerna s 108th anniversary on 27 August,” explained Elvira.

Meanwhile, KADIN Chairman Arsjad Rasjid, who is also present during the event, said, “We appreciate Sampoerna’s commitment to protecting its employees from the threat of COVID-19 through the Gotong Royong Vaccination program. This program is KADIN’s effort to contribute to the nation and help the Government recover from the pandemic situation and revive the nation’s economy. This joint effort is also to support achieving herd immunity.”

Arsjad further added that the Gotong Royong Vaccination program targets employees of KADIN’s members, with the companies bearing the costs. “Through this program, KADIN supports the government achieving the national vaccination target without burdening the state budget,” explained Arsjad.

The Ministry of Manpower appreciates Sampoerna’s efforts to vaccinate all of its direct and indirect employees. In this regard, the Manpower Minister gave a Charter of Appreciation for Sampoerna’s participation in building herd immunity. On the same occasion, the Manpower Minister also presented awards to Sampoerna and its TPOs as a “Resilient Industry in Absorbing Manpower during The Pandemic.” This award is given for the company’s endeavor to not only retain its workforce but also growing and absorbing more workers. In 2021, Sampoerna increased its SKT production capacity through the TPOs and employing over 6.000 additional workers across several TPOs.

“Of course, we are delighted to learn about this achievement, especially amid the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has many impacts on the economy. We hope that this can be an incentive for Sampoerna and its TPOs to continue working,” added the Minister of Manpower.

Elvira said, “We are very grateful for the award given by the Ministry of Manpower. This is an acknowledgment of our commitment and joint efforts in retaining and absorbing more workers, especially during the pandemic. The increase in labor absorption by our TPOs is a result of the Government’s decision not to increase the excise tariff for hand-rolled cigarettes (SKT) in 2021, with the main consideration of the SKT segment being a labor-intensive industry. For that, we express our appreciation to the Government under the leadership of President Jokowi.”

In addition to protecting employees, Sampoerna reaffirms its commitment to supporting the national economic recovery by supporting MSME actors and the community through various initiatives. Sampoerna and partners are launching digitalization efforts for MSMEs to increase their resilience and competitiveness during the pandemic. For the wider community, Sampoerna continues to synergize with various parties, one of which is through the KADIN, to distribute aid such as medical equipment, personal protective equipment, and staple foods, and to provide other facilities. Throughout 2020, the company has distributed aid with a value of around Rp 80 billion. As the pandemic is not yet over, Sampoerna continues with other initiatives to meet the needs of the community.

“Collaboration between parties will be the key in handling the pandemic. Together with the Government and KADIN, Sampoerna will actively participate and support national economic recovery efforts,” concluded Elvira.
